Wrist and Hand Numbness: Looking Beyond the Wrist

Tingling or numbness in the hand often leads straight to a search for carpal tunnel syndrome. The wrist is a real possible source — but it's rarely the only place worth checking.

The nerves supplying the hand travel a long route: from the neck, past the collarbone, through the shoulder and down the arm before reaching the wrist. Fascial tightness or restriction at any point along that path can irritate a nerve and produce hand symptoms, even when the wrist itself is fine. This is why hand numbness sometimes traces back to the neck or shoulder.

The nervous system keeps a sensitised nerve reactive, so symptoms can appear with minor triggers — a certain sleeping position, long hours typing — once the nerve has been irritated for a while.

Rehabilitation looks at the whole nerve pathway, restoring mobility and releasing fascial restriction from the neck down to the wrist, rather than assuming the wrist is the source. Some cases do involve the wrist directly; a personalized assessment tells them apart.

We offer home physiotherapy and rehabilitation for nerve-related, neck and musculoskeletal pain across Dubai and Jumeirah — physiotherapy in Dubai.
